Ried Gate and Jakob Tower
The Arnstadt Ried is a square with old town houses, some of which are still decorated with historic house symbols. The most significant house on the Ried, in architectural terms, boasts a wall painting showing St. Christopher and dating from 1574. Other interesting features of this square are the Ried Gate, one of two surviving town gates dating from the 15th century, and the Jakob Tower, part of the former St. Jakob’s Church. It bears witness to the fact that the town was on the historic Jakobsweg (St. James’ Route or Road to Santiago). A carillon plays daily every two hours between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
