The neo-Renaissance building, built as a grammar school in 1868, is the main section of the "Mühlhausen Museums".  After extensive renovation and redesign, Mühlhausen's Museum Centre has been created here.

In three exhibition areas, it presents the cultural history of the town and region: In "UNSTRUT-HAINICH in Depth", the focus is on settlement of the County of Unstrut-Hainich in the prehistoric and early history eras; the more recent art history of Thuringia is shown in "ArtLAND Thuringia".

In the first room, "Mühlhausen TOWN Stories" present the "Free Imperial Town" as an independent legal unit. The significant ecclesiastical history of the old Imperial Town is illustrated in the second room. In the room with the theme of "People's TOWN", the emphasis is primarily on special personages, associations and local traditional festivities, together with historic events. Two more areas showing town history follow.
