Merkers is to the south of the River Werra. To the north the Krayenberg hill rises to a height of 431m, forming a significant landmark in the area. Merkers is part of the Wartburg district in Thuringia and the location is at the inter-section of the 10 degree longitude and 50.85 degree latitude. Salt was mined here until production was stopped in 1993. Merkers has 12 protected architectural monuments. The hiking trail Eisenach - Eisenacher Haus, as well as the long-distance trail Werra from the source to the mouth passes through Merkers. Andreas Fack, the writer of the song Rhoenlied was born here on 1st March 1863.
