Ilm Valley Cycle Trail ****
Start at the Vesser Valley-Thuringian Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Allzunah and cycle via Stützerbach and Ilmenau, famous as a university town and town of Goethe, with two Goethe museums, to Langewiesen (show mine, Heinse House and Culture Factory). Shortly before you get to Stadtilm, it is worth making a detour to Singen to the smallest brewery in Thuringia. Via Stadtilm (Town of the 7 Wonders), Kleinhettstedt (art and mustard mill) and Dienstedt (karst cave), you arrive at Kranichfeld (Baumbach House, Upper Castle, 2-fortress town, falconry centre).
An outing to the nearby Hohenfelden reservoir lake with the forest climbing centre and the Avenida Thermal Baths is recommended. Then you continue via Bad Berka to the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Weimar. The poets Goethe and Schiller and the founding of the Bauhaus - the most revolutionary design school of the 20th century - have made it famous.
The next places on the route are Tiefurt with a castle and park and Ossmannstedt with the Wieland Estate. Apolda may tempt you to leave the route to see the House of Art and the Bell Museum. In Eberstedt, cyclists can visit the Historic Oil Mill with floating huts and a cyclists’ church.
Bad Sulza offers the exceptional Toskana Thermal Baths and a copy of Goethe’s summer house in Weimar. In Kaatschen-Weichau, the end of this tour, there is a direct link to the River Saale Cycle Trail.
The Cycle Trail is suitable for nature and culture enthusiasts and for families and touring cyclists. It is easy to reach using the network of the Deutsche Bahn.
Please note this construction work and these detours:
A new bridge is under construction to replace the Schafstegbrücke over the Ilm between Griesheim and Stadtilm. Until probably October 2015, the Cycle Trail between Griesheim and Stadtilm is rerouted via Niederwillingen. During construction work, the Cycle Trail is completely closed between Griesheim and Stadtilm, since the Ilm cannot be crossed here. Since February 2015, construction work has already been under way for the new bridge on the B90n, which also affects this area.
In the village of Gräfinau-Angstedt, construction work by the Ilmenau Water and Sewage Association will be in progress until probably the end of September. A detour via the road "Hinter den Gärten" is signposted.
