Historic railways

A special attraction of Thuringia is the various railways, each of them a unique technical monument. They are as much part of the Free State as the beautiful landscapes which they are running through.

Cross the Harz Mountains on board of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway and experience the flair of railway travel a hundred years ago. See the Oberweissbach Mountain and Schwarza Valley Railway – the steepest funicular railway for transportation of normal-gauge railway carriages. Take a ride on a historic tram and discover Thuringia’s capital Erfurt in the pace of the Sixties. Or visit the Steam Railways Museum in Arnstadt and be amazed by the historic locomotive shed with its nostalgic steam, diesel and shunting engines.
