Gera Cycle Trail

Höhe und Position

The Town Tour

This tour covers a total of 75 kilometres and begins in the Thuringian Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, at Schmücke directly by the Rennsteig Trail at a height of 916 metres (direct link to the Rennsteig Cycle Trail). From here, it descends via Elgersburg (with castle) to Geraberg with its German Thermometer Museum. Via Plaue, you then arrive at Arnstadt, the oldest place in Thuringia.

Several generations of the Bach family lived in Arnstadt and Johann Sebastian Bach was the organist at the Bach Church. Here he was able to use the time between church services to compose and his first works were completed. Visit "Mon Plaisir", Europe’s largest doll town, the model town "Arnstadt around 1740" in Thuringia’s oldest gardener's house or the church where J.S. Bach was married in nearby Dornheim. The Railway Museum offers special "treasures" for steam train enthusiasts.

Passing Molsdorf Castle, you arrive at the state capital city of Erfurt. Its many tourist attractions include the unique ensemble of St Mary’s Cathedral and St Severi Church, Petersberg Citadel, the Merchants’ Bridge (Krämerbrücke) - which is the longest street bridge in Europe that is completely lined with buildings and homes -, the town hall, the Erfurt Horticultural Exhibition and the Protestant Augustinian Monastery where Martin Luther studied. On the last kilometres of your tour, you can explore the nature reserve near Kühnhausen and the Baroque castle in Gebesee. The Cycle Trail joins the Unstrut Cycle Trail and is suitable for families, culture enthusiasts and touring cyclists.
