GDR history with or without tongue in cheek

Automobile World Eisenach

In 2005, the museum "automobile welt eisenach" was opened on the site of the former Eisenach automobile plant. More than 110 years of Eisenach automobile construction history are recorded here. Vehicles from all the production eras are on show, such as one of the first Wartburg motor cars dating from 1899, the EMW 327 and the AWE racing car dating from 1956.

Trabi Paradise in the Hainich National Park

In the Trabi Paradise, about 20 converted cars of the GDR make "Trabant" are on show, amongst them a fire engine, a "popemobile" or a pink convertible. What is more, a limousine and a Trabant-Kuebel are available for hire for a jaunt.

Museum „Olle DDR“ Apolda

In the building of the former Apolda County Council, you can become immersed in the everyday life of a citizen of the GDR. Together with a reconstructed flat typical of a new housing development, there is the office of a party functionary and the room of a factory nurse, together with many typical exhibits.

Ilmenau Toy Museum

In an area of some 600 square metres, the museum shows trains, metal toys, pedal cars, advertising figures and TV figures from the former GDR in a large variety.
