The Ekhof Theatre at Friedenstein Castle is one of the oldest Baroque theatres in the world with largely surviving stage machinery dating from the 17th century. The wooden scenery base and the then very modern quick-change machine permit a change of scenery in less than eight seconds. A wind machine, thunder shaft and sophisticated light management mean that very entertaining performances can be staged during the annual Ekhof Festival. During normal museum hours, visitors can view the theatre and the adjoining theatre exhibition, where the items on display include historic costumes, a model of the stage and parts of the stage machinery.
