Bad Sulza (sole spa)
Bad Sulza, a spa and town of wine, is situated in the Ilm Valley, four kilometres before the confluence with the river Saale. The surrounding slopes are the foothills of the Finne range and of the shell limestone hills of the Ilm-Saale plateau. Bad Sulza is situated in the "Untere Ilmaue" landscape conservation area. The climate is mild and the position sheltered, so that vines can be grown on the south-facing limestone slopes.
The "Saale-Unstrut" Wine Trail was extended from Saxony-Anhalt into Thuringia to Bad Sulza in 1994, and gained a further tourist attraction by the opening of the Thuringian Wine Gate.
