Bad Blankenburg (resort)
Do you know where your children learned to play? Here in Bad Blankenburg, a spa town and also known as the town of LAVENDER, the KINDERGARTEN was born! In 1840, the educationalist and classical scholar FRIEDRICH FROEBEL opened the first German kindergarten in Bad Blankenburg. The lovely word "Kindergarten" - a garden for children - unites three inseparable values, namely work, family and child care. You will find Froebel's life's work lovingly presented in the world-famous Froebel Museum in Bad Blankenburg. Come and discover the informative stages along the Froebel Hiking Trail and round off your walk at the "Froebel View", a monument and simultaneously a fantastic viewing point. The hiking and recreation area around Bad Blankenburg borders on the Thuringian Forest, the Thuringian Schiefergebirge mountain range and is symbolically the GATE to the SCHWARZA VALLEY. Hiking is a trend sport today, which you can experience on the Thuringia Trail, the long-distance trail from Eisenach to Budapest and the certified "Schwarza Valley Panorama Trail". The town's most famous landmark is Greifenstein Castle with its impressive eagles and falcons. It is one of the largest German feudal castles and was the original home of the counts and princes of Schwarzburg, Blankenburg line.
At the foot of the castle and directly on the Beer and Castle Route is the Watzdorf Show Brewery which celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2011. Beer has been brewed here with much loving care since 1411 and you will see the contrast between old craft techniques and state-of-the-art processes. As well as drinking the delicious beer, you can enjoy a guided tour of the brewery, visit the museum and the steam engine or savour a country-style snack in a traditional atmosphere.
In Bad Blankenburg, the beginnings of spa operations can be traced back to the mid-19th century and a cold-water sanatorium. The St. Antonius medicinal spring with its sodium-calcium-chloride water can be tasted at any time in the pavilion in the spa gardens. Whether the Japanese cherry blossom in the spring, the rose fountain or the Kneipp foot pool - every visitor to the gardens will find a little beauty and health! Every summer, Bad Blankenburg celebrates its traditional Lavender Festival, which begins with a festive entry to the marketplace and the crowning of the Lavender Queen. There are a wealth of activities around the marketplace and the fragrance of lavender in the air!
At the modern sports and conference centre of the Land Sports Association, numerous international sports events are held, together with many meetings and training courses. From 1926 onwards, Bad Blankenburg was the conference venue of the Convention of Representative of the German Gymnastics Association, which also built the Bad Blankenburg Municipal Hall. This large hall today offers a wide range of cultural events, trade fairs, exhibitions and markets.
Located in the triangle of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt-Bad Blankenburg, the town of Bad Blankenburg has ideal connections to Thuringia's centres of cultural history, such as Jena, Erfurt and Weimar. Walking, fine dining, with a pinch of culture - the ideal recipe, which we hope you will savour. We can't wait to welcome you!
