3rd Thuringian State Garden Show in Schmalkalden
From 25 April to 4 October 2015, Schmalkalden is hosting the great Thuringian garden festival. Like a string of pearls, the different sections of the Garden Show are linked to form the stations in a garden journey through time. The route through the Old Quarter connects the Show's green spaces and presents Schmalkalden as a fascinating memento to European urban development. The terraced garden at Wilhelmsburg Castle, which was originally designed in line with French and Italian models, has been redeveloped on the basis of historic plans and and restored to the old splendour of this jewel of art and culture.
In an area of some 13 hectares, visitors will enjoy a vivid presentation of horticultural enterprise. Thousands of flowers will enchant them with their fragrance and colour. Impressive theme gardens and magnificent flower shows will demonstrate the creativity of Thuringian gardeners and florists.
Music, street performers, theatre and cabaret bring life to the 163-day garden festival. Artists, associations, groups and institutions from the region are using the State Garden Show as a platform to present their programmes.
In a specially designed open-air church, the focus is on the journey through life.
The Green Classroom offers teaching modules relating to flora and fauna for young nature lovers and schoolchildren.
Trained guides provide information about the concept and exhibition sections of the State Garden Show and about the history of the town and region. Parties can book guided tours.
The ticket price includes almost all the events held in the sections to which admission is granted. And with the family ticket, children aged between 6 and 17 years are admitted free when accompanied by their parents.
